“The World’s Original Marmalade Awards
Best in show” reproduced by Thursday Cottage
New “Thursday Cottage prize for Innovation”

Thursday Cottage has reproduced the “Best in Show” marmalade from The World’s Original Marmalade Awards:  Janice Miners’ delicious and topical Grapefruit and Gin Marmalade.  Thursday Cottage developed Janice’s recipe and ran trials to taste tests before producing the jars that are now on sale in Fortnum & Mason and at Dalemain Mansion in Cumbria. Thousands of jars of marmalade from across the world were judged at Dalemain in February to select the Best in Show and the award winning marmalade was released to the public at the Marmalade Festival in mid-March.  50p from the sale of each jar will go to Hospice at Home in Carlisle and the North West

“Creating a delicious award winning marmalade in a domestic kitchen is a challenge but developing that recipe for Thursday Cottage’s commercial kitchen so that hundreds/thousands of jars of marmalade can be made is an even greater challenge,” said Chris Newenham, director of Thursday Cottage.  “We are delighted to have played our part by producing this amazing marmalade that will now be enjoyed by so many people”

A new category: “Thursday Cottage Prize for Innovation” was won by Veda Karlo, a marmalade maker from New York who’s Seville Orange, Cranberry and Horseradish Marmalade defied all expectations to seize the prize. Working the unusual flavours together she said this marmalade was great with foul (turkey or chicken).  Veda will visit Thursday Cottage in the summer to learn more about marmalade making in Essex.

The quirky World’s Original Marmalade Awards were founded by Jane Hassell-McCosh in 2005 to help to preserve, grow and widen one of the most British of customs – marmalade making.
